FAQ

1. What exactly are the DHC requirements for my first year?

As a first-year DHC student you are required to complete one four-unit Honors Seminar, one Honors Challenge Section and one additional Honors Course during the academic year. With three quarters in a year, it works well to take one DHC requirement per quarter.

Alternately, if you enroll in an Honors Chemistry or Physics course, you can count it toward your DHC requirements for a Challenge Section or Course.

In addition to completing the course requirements, students are expected to earn a minimum 3.25 UCD Grade Point Average by the end of Spring quarter in order to contine their participation in the program the following year.

2. What is an "Honors Challenge Section" or "Honors Course?"

Honors Challenge Sections are separate, one-unit additions to regularly-scheduled courses. Enrollment in Challenge Sections is limited to 15 DHC students, and they are offered in conjunction with courses you will need for graduation.

If you are taking an Honors Challenge Section for your DHC requirements, you will attend the regular class meeting time(s). You will also attend your Honors Challenge Section for one hour per week.

Honors Courses are usually offered in English and Comparative Literature and will satisfy your College English or General Education requirements. Since the whole class consists of DHC students only, there is no additional Challenge Section. You just attend the regular class meeting with other DHC students. We also have Honors Courses throughout the year, some offered as Freshman Seminars or in specific disciplines of interest to DHC students. You will learn more about these courses at Summer Orientation.

What to expect from DHC Courses: DHC faculty are encouraged to add to and/or elaborate on some aspect of the academic material taught in the regular course. In some cases, instructors use DHC courses as an opprtunity to try new activities - field trips, student presentations, lab tours, etc. Your DHC courses will provide you with a stimulating and engaging addition to the course material and the chance to get to know your professor one-on-one.

Honors Chemistry and Physics courses are offered by the corresponding department and are not DHC courses. They can, however, count toward your DHC Challenge Section/Honors Course requirement. Honors courses in Chemistry and Physics move at a faster pace and cover additional material that the regular course does not. 3. How do I select my DHC course for the Fall?

You can find a list of the DHC Courses offered for fall on the course offerings page. This page will be updated regularly. Before selecting a course, please read carefully the information below.

You must communicate with an Honors Counselor in order to sign up for your DHC Course. We have provided the course offerings to give you an idea of what is available. However, your actual DHC course placement will be made after discussion with an Honors Counselor. Honors Counselors are specially trained to help you select DHC courses which will work best in your academic plan. We will ask for your flexibility during this process.

Students who attend Summer Orientation will select a DHC course at that time.

If you are not attending Summer Orientation, please call DHC at (530) 752-3223 for assistance with course selection.

4. What about registration?

Once you have signed up for a DHC course with an Honors Counselor, you will receive a number for you to use when you officially register for your DHC course.

You are responsible for officially registering via SISWEB for BOTH your Challenge Section AND your regular course. If you do not register for both courses, you will not receive DHC credit!

In some cases there is a limit to which sections of the regular course you can sign up for. We want to make sure that the lecture you sign up for has the same instructor as your Challenge Section. Because there are limitations like this, it is important that students read the details in the course offerings list very carefully.

All DHC courses (including companion lectures) must be taken for a letter grade to count toward DHC requirements. DHC courses and lectures may not be taken Pass/No Pass (P/NP).

Closed Classes: When an Honors Counselor places your name on our sign-up list for a Challenge Section, you are guaranteed your space in that Challenge Section. If, for any reason, you are unable to add your Challenge Section on SISWEB, contact an Honors Counselor right away.

We cannot guarantee spaces for DHC students in non-DHC courses, so register for the lecture course during your Pass One registration appointment. If you signed up with an Honors Counselor for the adjoining Challenge Section but the lecture course is full, please contact the DHC office right away. In some cases, we can attempt to secure you a space.

If you are unable to register for the lecture course during Pass Two, please make sure to place yourself on the waiting list and contact the DHC office at that time.
