Examples of Honors Contract Topics and Final Products

DHC’s intention is that Honors Contract assignments supplement, and not replace, work required in the original course. Students and instructors are encouraged to be creative in developing a contract topic and final product. Below are some examples of previous DHC students’ contract topics and final products presented to their instructors for evaluation. These are provided to give you some idea of the types of projects students have done in the past. It is up to each student to work with her or his instructor to come up with the most appropriate topic and final product for the individual situation.


Course: BIS 103, Bioenergetics and Metabolism
Topic: Biochemistry Media on Glycosis
Final Product: 10-minute film (using Flash) to illustrate the steps in Glycosis

Course: ASA 155, Legal History and the Asian American
Topic: Legal research on Filipino WWII veterans
Tangible Evidence: Legal brief on behalf of a hypothetical Filipino WWII veteran suing for veterans’ benefits

Course: NUT 114, Developmental Nutrition
Topic: Preeclampsia (as related to maternal nutrition status and development of fetus)
Tangible Evidence: One-and-a-half-hour power point presentation for the class

Course: POL 160, American Political Parties
Topic: California Political Parties and how they dealt with the energy crisis in the legislature
Tangible Evidence: 6-page research paper

Course: EVE 100, Introduction to Evolution
Topic: Evolution Websites
Tangible Evidence: Website linked to EVE 100 web page detailing specific evolution links, organized and annotated based on content and application to the course

Course: TXC 107, Social and Psychological Aspects of Clothing
Topic: Design a line of clothing for a celebrity, incorporating celebrity’s race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender and social class
Tangible Evidence: Two dresses, formal sketches and a summary paper

Course: NPB 101, Systemic Physiology
Topic: Epidemiology of SARS and how the virus affects the body
Tangible Evidence: 5-8 page paper

Course: PSC 165, Introduction to Clinical Psychology
Topic: Comparison among the mental health careers
Tangible Evidence: Presentation to Psychology students of results from interviewing several mental health professionals in different careers to find out what different careers are “really” like

Course: CMN 170, Communication, Technology, and Society
Topic: Study of an online gaming community and how people interact with it
Tangible Evidence: 5-8 page field report describing social interactions with and observations of the community
