DHC
Courses and Graduation Requirements
DHC requirements are intended
to go hand-in-hand with requirements you will be taking
for graduation. Courses at UC Davis are broken down into
different categories, and all students take courses from
each of these categories, which include
DHC courses also fit into the categories above.
You will have success with DHC course selection
if you can identify the categories you are hoping to fill
with your Fall DHC course, rather than selecting a specific
course offering at the outset of registration.
We will ask for your flexibility as we help you select a
course that fits well with your academic plan.
UC Davis Course
Categories
General
Education: All UC Davis students are required
to complete a minimum of 6 General Education courses. General
Education courses are identified by three topical areas.
- Arts & Humanities
- Social Sciences
- Science & Engineering
UC Davis majors are identified by the same topical areas
listed above. You will take three courses in each of the
two areas outside your major. You will not have to take
GE courses in the topical area of your major.
General Education courses also satisfy the Writing Component
and Social-Cultural Diversity Requirement. You should read
more about the details for these requirements in the UCD
General Catalog.
For the purposes of your Fall DHC course selection,
one option is to focus on the two topical areas outside
your major. You can look for any open Challenge Section
that falls into one of the topical areas you need for GE.
If you are exploring majors, you might want to select the
GE category that you are least likely to major in. To find
out which category each major falls under, go to the General
Catalog.
Preparatory
Requirements: The General
Catalog lists all the course requirements for each major.
“Preparatory" requirements are those you need
to complete in your first two years of study as they will
prepare you for upper division coursework in your major.
Specific preparatory courses vary amongst majors, but some
examples include Math, Political Science, Statistics, and
Sociology.
College
English Requirement: Depending on your major
and the college it falls into, you will have a different
College English Requirement to complete. You should look
this up in the General
Catalog for the details, but for DHC purposes, you can
select a DHC course that meets some part of this requirement.
Examples include English 3, and Comparative Literature 1,
2, 3, or 4.
Electives:
To encourage exploration of your diverse interests,
each major requires some number of "electives."
An elective can be any course, and the units you receive
count toward the number of units you will need to graduate.
This allows you as an incoming student to be flexible in
choosing your courses because you know that any
course you choose will count toward your graduation requirements.
Now that you have learned more about the
different categories of courses, check out the Fall DHC
Course
Offerings to see what courses you might
like to take.
