Goals of DHC Research Seminars
  • to provide an opportunity to study a complex contemporary problem.
  • to foster critical thinking and analytic interpretation.
  • to improve oral and written communication skills.
  • to enhance research skills.
  • to provide experience with group dynamics and collaborative exploration of interdisciplinary problems.
  • to develop familiarity with electronic communication and multi-media presentations.
  • to enhance ethical foundations and expand a sense of social responsibility.

Student & Faculty Responsibilities

GOAL: to provide an opportunity to study a complex contemporary problem.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to master the subject matter under consideration and to consider diverse, even conflicting, perspectives on pertinent topics and issues.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to facilitate exploration of the problem by providing initial information and additional resources, as needed.

GOAL: to foster critical thinking and analytic interpretation.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to look beyond the facts and figures and to consider deeper issues and underlying interrelationships between related topics.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to guide students in directions of inquiry that lead to broader perspectives and deeper questions.

GOAL: to improve oral and written communication skills.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to provide other students with constructive criticism and to take seriously the comments and suggestions provided by fellow students and by the faculty member.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to provide comments and evaluations on a timely basis so that students can incorporate them into their subsequent efforts.

GOAL: to enhance research skills.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to investigate all possible avenues of finding information on a topic.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to introduce students to new methods of doing research.

GOAL: to provide experience with group dynamics and collaborative exploration of interdisciplinary problems.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to participate effectively in the team's learning efforts, both in and out of the classroom, while carrying a fair share of the workload. Also to provide regular reports regarding group and individual progress.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to monitor and assess the teams' efforts and group dynamics and assist the teams to move forward.

GOAL: to develop familiarity with electronic communication and multi-media presentations.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to be connected electronically and to make use of a wide range of electronic resources.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to integrate electronic communication and presentations into the seminar process.

GOAL: to enhance ethical foundations and expand a sense of social responsibility.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: to respect at all times the diversity of opinions likely to be encountered in a team situation.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITY: to provide leadership and to insure that issues related to ethical foundations and a sense of social responsibility are addressed in the seminars.

LEVEL OF EFFORT: Students are expected to devote at least nine hours each week to the seminar, and to meet all established deadlines.

ASSESSMENT: Assessment will be based both on individual participation within groups and on group project reports. The assessment may take a variety of formats, including papers, journals, electronic multimedia products, etc.
