2008-2009 Service Learning Program

What is the Service Learning Program (SLP)?
The SLP engages small groups of DHC students in organized service projects that meet the needs of their community. Students gain valuable learning experiences as they apply critical thinking, communication and teamwork skills to real-world situations. The SLP has a myriad of project opportunities, and encourages students to create their own projects as well.

Is there a class I must attend?
Yes, there is a weekly class that everyone must attend. Students receive one unit of credit for enrolling in the class, HNR 98. If you have a conflict with the class meeting time, please contact the Coordinators.

Since the class is one unit, students should plan on spending three hours a week engaged in their service project.

An important aspect of the SLP is personal growth. Accordingly, several brief journals will be assigned in order to assist students with reflecting on their experience.

Past participants in the Service Learning Program are not required to attend class, but must complete alternate assignments. These assignments are developed individually for each student's project.

Registration/How can I participate?
You can register for the Service Learning Class on SISWEB, the same way you do any other class. For Spring 2009, SLP will be held on Thursday 11am-1150am in 565 Kerr Hall.
