Recent Service Learning Projects

Is there something in your community you would like to change? Do you have a special interest that can be turned into a service project?

Bring your excellent ideas to the first Service Learning meeting or talk to a coordinator. Here is your chance to create a unique project for the quarter. Below are some projects that students have done in past years.

Courtyard Health Care Center – Courtyard is a Health Center for the elderly. It provides living accommodations, food service, health care, activities, and assistance with daily living for the frail and elderly. Students visited with residents and talked about what music they liked. The SLP participants found music and lyrics and held a Sing-A-Long that turned into a rockin’ dance party. The students and the residents enjoyed the music and the socializing!

Yolo County SPCA & Davis Senior Center – The SPCA works to find homes for homeless animals, provide affordable spaying and neutering, and promote humane education. Students arranged to bring animals from the SPCA to the Davis Senior Center to visit with Davis Seniors. They contacted both the SPCA and the Senior Center to bring the organizations together for this joyous event.

Cancer Awareness – According to the American Cancer Society, cancer accounts for nearly one-quarter of deaths in the United States. Part of preventing cancer is educating the public about cancer and supporting those diagnosed with cancer and their families. Previously, students participated in cancer walks and Relay for Life, created community awareness through residence hall presentations, and tabled at farmer's market to share information with the public and find supporters for the Picture a Cure campaign. Students worked in cooperation with the American Cancer Society and Colleges Against Cancer.

Grocery Shopping for Seniors – Join other students creating a grocery shopping service for senior citizens who have difficulty shopping for themselves. Help with the shopping and organizing as your group tries to expand the program to reach more people. You will work with various contacts in Davis including the Senior Center. Use your networking and business skills to spread the word and find more volunteers to make this program a success. Also, the Senior Center has expressed interest in having this group create personalized bus schedules for seniors.

Explorit Science Center – Help a great cause by spreading the wonderful world of science to little girls and boys! The Explorit Science Center is “an innovative center for hands-on exploration and engages children and adults throughout the greater Sacramento area in science discovery,” and they need your help! Join their massive team of volunteers, including your fellow DHC students in assisting with science presentations. Some projects Explorit needs help with include updating materials/ content, planning a family Saturday program, organizing exhibit materials, and labeling, printing, and organizing educator materials.
