DHC is currently recruiting positive and creative continuing Davis Honors Challenge students to help administer the DHC Service Learning Program (SLP). The Service Learning Program provides students with the opportunity to receive academic credit and develop professional skills through initiating and pursuing community service projects. Useful coordinator qualifications include depth of understanding of group dynamics and leadership in teams, strong interpersonal communication skills, and a commitment to community service. Applicants should have experience in campus/community relations and show a desire to further develop the Service Learning Program. Participation in the SLP and/or other community service initiatives on the UC Davis campus is helpful.

Service Learning Coordinator Responsibilities:

A) Facilitate the Service Learning Program
• Prepare the quarter’s curriculum and class meeting time
• Prepare and relate each class period to the students’ projects or a common learning experience (including discussions and lesson plans)
• Introduce students to the program and its requirements
• Provide advice to students regarding projects in progress
• Keep accurate records of student participation
• Maintain the SLP email account
• Develop journal assignments and give effective written feedback
• Communicate regularly with DHC staff and co-coordinator

B) Promote service learning and its integration into the program
• Research and develop new ways to engage DHC students in community service experiences
• Coordinate at least one DHC-wide community service event each quarter
• Consistently evaluate the program’s effectiveness and make appropriate changes

C) Influence student development
• Facilitate discussions and reflection activities (both oral and written) for SLP participants
• Demand a high level of accountability from student teams
• Require team meetings and development of projects outside of class
• Expect professionalism from students when communicating with community members
• Educate participants about various campus and community opportunities and resources
• Inspire students’ interest in community service
• Educate students about the relationships between diversity and community service

Your application should include:
• Cover letter describing your interest in being a Service Learning Coordinator and ability to meet the responsibilities of the position
• Resume indicating relevant experiences and skills
• Current contact information (address, phone, email)
• Current Cumulative UCD GPA
• List of DHC courses and other areas of DHC involvement
• Contact information for two references (name, title, organization, email address, phone number)
• Proposal for how you can ensure that learning plays a role in service learning (maximum 1 page, typed).

This position is a one-year commitment for the 2008-2009 academic year. Some training and preparatory work will be completed in Spring and Summer 2008. The position requires approximately 4 hours of work per week. Students may receive one unit of HNR 198 (P/NP) each quarter or internship transcript notation.

Application materials are due to Lindsay Hass in 580 Kerr Hall. Interviews will be conducted in late May.

For questions about the Service Learning Coordinator position or application, please contact our current Service Learning Coordinators, Tram Nguyen (tthnguy@ucdavis.edu) and Elizabeth Takahashi (eytakahashi@ucdavis.edu) or Lindsay Hass at lnhass@ucdavis.edu.
